Solution for IBM Mainframes

Company overview:
Bus-Tech, Inc., founded in 1987, is a leading provider of state-of-the-art connectivity solutions for the mainframe data center. Bus-Tech provides simple, flexible, and cost-effective mainframe to open systems storage connectivity solutions to data centers whose mission-critical applications and data reside on IBM or compatible mainframes. Based on Bus-Tech's FICON and ESCON channel adapters, the products offer high-bandwidth and high-availability features at affordable price points.

Solution Description :
The Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS) is a tape-on-disk controller that attaches directly to the mainframe FICON or ESCON input/output channels and uses standard Gigabit Ethernet IP to attach to EMC Celerra storage systems. MAS emulates multiple 3480/3490 tape drives, allowing mainframe-based tape and optical applications to transparently store data on Celerra by writing files to disk as an emulated tape device. The MAS supports z/OS, S/390, and VSE mainframe environments. MAS Ex (ESCON) and Fx (FICON) contain significant performance enhancements specific to EMC that can deliver up to a 30 percent performance advantage over all other versions of MAS.

Key Business Value:
MAS with Celerra is a high-performance tape-on-disk backup solution which is highly scalable and easily configurable to address the most rigorous data center high availability requirements. By using MAS and Celerra, customers can replace their aging mainframe tape and optical based backup solutions with low-cost disk-based backup utilizing ATA storage. MAS with Celerra delivers the benefits of both Automated Tape Libraries (ATL) and Virtual Tape Systems (VTS) in a single solution. Significant savings can be realized in initial costs, data center footprint, reduced electrical and air conditioning requirements, and improved operational efficiencies. Customers are able to complete batch processing in less time because physical tape handling is eliminated. Deploying backup and archive data locally or remotely on high availability storage arrays enhances business continuance and disaster recovery.
